What we believe · The Commonwealth X manifesto
Build a life
you control.
Your future is too important to leave entirely in the hands of one government, one institution or one version of the world.

A practical business.
Why this exists
You do not have to wait for the country to change.
I believe Britain is in serious decline, and that much of Europe is risking its future by failing to adapt. I see institutions asking people to accept deteriorating prospects while promising that the next round of policy will put things right. I am unwilling to make my own future depend on that promise.
The pressures are concrete. The European Commission’s account of the Draghi report identifies slowing productivity, demographic challenges, energy costs and growing global competition. In Britain, the OBR’s July 2026 scenarios show long-term fiscal pressure under unchanged policy, particularly from an ageing population. Those are conditional projections; they are not a date for collapse.
My conclusion is straightforward. If you have the ability to build a life elsewhere, start preparing now. Understand your options while you have time to choose them properly. You do not need to wait for a crisis to discover that every important part of your life depends on the same system.
Leaving requires judgment. Staying requires judgment too. What I object to is drifting into either because you never did the work.
The idea behind the work
Technology changes the balance of power.
The Sovereign Individual, by James Dale Davidson and William Rees-Mogg, helped shape my thinking about how portable knowledge, digital work and encrypted transactions could change the relationship between individuals and states. I take the challenge seriously: become more capable of directing your own life. Its predictions are a lens for thinking, not a promise that governments or legal obligations disappear.
The Sovereign Individual — authorised publisher excerptSovereignty starts with the ability to act.
You can spend years being right about what is going wrong and still have no practical alternative. An opinion does not open a bank account, make your business portable or give your family a workable plan.
We believe in building that capability: understanding what you own, how you earn, where you can live and who you rely on. The point is to have a real choice when the circumstances change.
Your birthplace need not set the limits of your life.
You can care deeply about the country you came from and decide to build your future elsewhere. You can keep your friendships, your identity and your responsibilities while choosing a different place to live and work.
A second jurisdiction should solve something specific. Better conditions for the business. A life you actually enjoy. A credible alternative if your first plan stops working. Accumulating companies and residence cards without understanding them just gives you more administration.
Crypto changed who can hold the keys.
Bitcoin made direct digital transfers possible through a network designed to operate without a financial institution between the two parties. That is a profound change in the relationship between money, institutions and the individual.
For us, the important consequence is responsibility. If you choose self-custody, you need to understand access, backups and recovery. Holding your own keys does not erase the law, remove market risk or make a bad decision reversible. Freedom is more useful when you know how it works.
Bitcoin — the original technical paperYour digital life deserves a proper security strategy.
Your email, phone, identity documents, company records and wallets are connected. Losing one can put the others out of reach. A life spread across countries needs more thought about those dependencies, not less.
We believe a serious plan includes secure access, supported backups, a safe recovery test and a written disaster-recovery document. It should also say who can act if you are unavailable. The people responsible need a usable process and the right authority. Secrets belong in their own secure arrangement.
Start with the private security checkIndependence demands discipline.
Sovereignty asks more of you. You have to understand the obligations you take on, keep records, maintain your health and deal with the work you would rather postpone. A clever structure is of little use if you cannot run it properly.
For me, fitness belongs in the same conversation. Energy, routine and the ability to look after yourself affect every other decision. I want an international life that works on an ordinary Tuesday, as well as in the photograph.
Build relationships you can rely on.
You will still need people. A lawyer who understands the jurisdiction. An accountant who sees the whole picture. A banking contact who can explain what is possible. Friends who know the place you are trying to make home.
Commonwealth X exists to connect those decisions and those people. We keep the wider situation in view, make clear what still needs checking and stay accountable for the work agreed.
The principle we work by
Think independently.
Build options.
Take responsibility.

Start with your situation. We can work through the decisions, the dependencies and the people you need.
