Imagine your main phone is gone
Start with an ordinary interruption. You lose your phone while travelling. Your email, authentication apps, bank access and travel documents may all depend on that one device. What happens next?
You should be able to explain the recovery sequence without guessing. If you cannot, that is a useful place to begin.
Map the dependencies
List the critical accounts and devices. Record what each one needs for access and recovery, and notice any circular dependency: the account that requires the phone that requires the account.
Keep the overview separate from passwords, private keys and recovery phrases. Ordinary shared planning documents are not a place for those secrets.
Make the plan usable
Understand the recovery procedure for your particular account or custody arrangement. Follow the provider’s guidance and test it safely, without risking access or exposing sensitive material.
If someone else may need to help, decide what they should know, where they should begin and what authority they would need. Clear responsibilities matter as much as the technology.
Review it when life changes
A new device, a different custodian or a move abroad can change the plan. Build a review into those moments. Good security is a routine you can keep up.
